Mombracco
Already known by the genius Leonardo da vinci for its quartzite quarries, Mombracco is the natural connection between the densely populated plain and the wild mountain area. Its slopes are covered by secular chestnut woods: they were once exploited for their wood and, chiefly, for the alimentary use of their fruits. The mysterious ’balme’ (humble houses perfectly sheltered under rocks) and many rock engravings like cupmarks, crosses and anthropomorphic figures are witnesses of the ancient civilization which developed in this area and raised wonderful buidings of medieval religious architecture.
